Using a black light to find urine spots and odor:
A black light is used for locating dried urine and other organic materials in carpet. In addition to urine detection, the black light detects other biologic materials at the surface of carpet and fabric when used in a well-darkened room. Organic materials consist of urine, feces, saliva, vomit, semen.
Black lights have been around for years and have multiple uses. They have been even used on television in forensic crime shows. Using a black light is an effective way of detecting urine crystals and other biologic materials in carpet and on other surfaces. Until you know precisely where the pet urine is in the carpet, it is impossible to eliminate the pet odors.
A black light urine detector can detect of the source of pet odors and stains. When purchasing a black light, wattage is a very important consideration. Our recommendation is the Anti-Icky-Poo Black light, it is the right size for detecting the problems in carpet and other fabrics. Another great urine detection tool is the hand held portable black light. Don't be fooled by toy UV hand held devices.
How do I use a black light urine detector?
When using a black light urine detector, the room should be as dark as possible. Nighttime is best for optimum darkness and is recommended over room darkening shades. Using the night time method works best, this allows you to see urine spots clear across the room. A black light is a fluorescent type U.V. lamp. Once you detect the urine spots, it is recommended that you use masking tape to mark off those areas that are affected. Once those areas are determined, begin to threat the area with the treatment process of the Anti-Icky-Poo when you turn the lights back on.
Keep in mind that only surface urine is illuminated. If this is the only tool (other than your nose) that you are using, you will need to anticipate that the urine has spread underneath, particularly when dealing with heavy contaminated carpeting. You will need to treat the carpet padding and in more severe cases, the sub flooring will also need to be treated. |
