Litter Box Issues
There are usually three different reasons that cats have litter box issues. They are:
- Medical Reasons. The first thing you should do if your cat stops using the litter box is take it to the vet for a full urinalisys. When I cat refuses to use that litter box that can be a sign of a urinary tract infection. The cat associates the pain and discomfort with the litter box so it will often urinate on the floor.
- The Box. Is the box cleaned regularly? Are there too many cats using the same box? Are you not using enough litter? Look at the litter box from the cat's point of view. You might like that box outside because it doesn't make your house smell but is it too cold for the cat to use it in the winter?
- Emotional or Environmental. Any sudden changes in a cat's life like moving, new baby, divorce, home renovations, addition of other cats, or tension between cats can cause a cat to feel unsafe in the litter box. You'll often find they are eliminating in an open space that provides for easy escape from a possible threatening situation. Cats are most vulnerable while using the litter box.
