Description of American Wirehair Cat Breed

It has been said that the American Wirehair breed began as a spontaneous mutation in a litter of farm cats in 1966. Although a spontaneous mutation is uncommon is does happen. The American Wirehair coat is the characteristic that separates the American Wirehair from all other breeds. There are wide varieties of the texture in hair of the American Wirehairs. Since this spontaneous mutation is dominant, approximately half of the kittens will have the wirehaired coat at birth. The wiskers are the most apparent of the wiring, the ideal American Wirehair will have wired hair at birth.  If the coat has ringlets, the hair may be too long and may wave or straighten with maturity of the coat.  The degree of coarseness of the coat in a kitten is a direct result of the coat texture of the parents.

The Cat Fanciers Association first accepted the American Wirehairs for registration in 1967 and were allowed to compete for championship in 1978.  American Wirehairs are very easy to care for and pet owners are delighted with their quiet, reserved and loving demeanor.

Pricing on American Wirehairs varies from breeder to breeder but generally the pricing  on an American Wirehair depends on type, applicable markings and bloodlines.

Typically breeders of all breeds of kittens release their kittens somewhere between twelve and sixteen weeks of age. The reasoning behind keeping a kitten until after twelve weeks is that kittens have had their basic inoculations. This gives them time to develop the physical and social stability needed to make a smooth transition into their new environment.  It is never recommended that a breeder release a kitten before twelve weeks of age as the kittens need this time to develop properly. Releasing a kitten prior to twelve weeks of age is against the law in many states.  It is also recommended that you keep all pedigreed cats and kittens indoors and that they be spayed or neutered.  Cats and kittens of all ages also need suitable surfaces for scratching, such as scratching posts.  Scratching is a natural behavior of the cat breed and declawing a cat is not recommended and is not accepted by the Cat Fanciers Association.
