Description of American Shorthair Cat Breed
The American Shorthair was originally known as the Domestic Shorthair, in 1966 the breed was renamed to the American Shorthair. The American Shorthair is a gentle loving breed making excellent, gentle companions. It's by coincidence that the non-pedigreed shorthaired cat Domestic Shorthair resembles the American Shorthair, just as another random-bred cat might look like a Birman, Ragdoll or Persian.
The American Shorthair offers more than eighty different patterns and colors ranging from the striking brown patched tabby to the beautifully shaded silvers, the beautiful eyes of the blue-eyed white, to cameos and smokes to the flashy calico van, and many other colors. The most widely known American Shorthair color is the silver tabby, with dense black markings set on a sterling silver background. American Shorthairs are one of the ten most popular breeds of cat.
Pricing on American Shorthairs varies from breeder to breeder but generally the pricing on an American Shorthairs depends on type, applicable markings and bloodlines.
Typically breeders of all breeds of kittens release their kittens somewhere between twelve and sixteen weeks of age. The reasoning behind keeping a kitten until after twelve weeks is that kittens have had their basic inoculations. This gives them time to develop the physical and social stability needed to make a smooth transition into their new environment. It is never recommended that a breeder release a kitten before twelve weeks of age as the kittens need this time to develop properly. Releasing a kitten prior to twelve weeks of age is against the law in many states. It is also recommended that you keep all pedigreed cats and kittens indoors and that they be spayed or neutered. Cats and kittens of all ages also need suitable surfaces for scratching, such as scratching posts. Scratching is a natural behavior of the cat breed and declawing a cat is not recommended and is not accepted by the Cat Fanciers Association.
